About the Show
We are casting a full-length, family-friendly musical comedy filled with sharp humor, high-energy performances, original songs, and meaningful character arcs.
This is not a kiddie pirate show. This is a fast-paced, character-driven theatrical production with comedy, heart, and audience interaction.
The Captain Scalawag Pirate Adventure: Half a Map, Whole Lotta Trouble is a theatrical adventure set in a world of pirates, mystery, and myth. The story centers on a legendary lost treasure left behind by the infamous Captain Bloody Boden Hale. Two competing crews, each entrusted with half of his treasure map, must prove themselves worthy of claiming the whole, while the “Council of the Pirate Seas” — the audience — helps guide the contest through interactive moments along the way.
At the heart of the story are two very different captains. Captain Scalawag leads with charm, instinct, and fierce loyalty to his crew, while Captain Cortland James appears composed and disciplined, though his true identity and motives gradually come into question. As the trials progress, rivalries intensify, truths are revealed, loyalties are tested, and each character must confront what truly matters: ambition, duty, freedom, or connection.
The production blends comedy, music, movement, and storytelling into an engaging stage experience designed to entertain both families and adult audiences alike.

Character Breakdown

Captain Cortland James
(Acting / Singing / Dancing)
Handsome, composed, and impeccably disciplined, Captain Cortland James presents himself as the capable leader of the pirate vessel The Reasonable Request, competing for the lost treasure of the infamous Captain Bloody Boden Hale. Beneath this carefully constructed façade, however, lies his true identity: a British Naval officer operating undercover, tasked with reclaiming Captain Scalawag’s half of the map for King and Country — and bringing Scalawag himself to justice.
Driven by duty, honor, and a deep respect for order, Cortland finds himself at odds with the very world he must convincingly inhabit. He harbors genuine feelings for Hayley Wynter, though he suppresses them in favor of ambition and responsibility. Sharp-minded, articulate, and quietly witty, Cortland may initially appear rigid, but his journey reveals a man of principle, growth, and quiet heroism.
First Mate Swinford Thorne
(Acting / Singing or Talk-Singing / Dancing)
Swinford Thorne is a hardened pirate with a sharp tongue, a long memory, and a dangerous edge. Once a member of Captain Scalawag’s crew, Swinford attempted to lead a mutiny — an effort that failed spectacularly, leaving him humiliated, cast out, and quietly seething.
Now serving as First Mate aboard The Reasonable Request, he claims to seek legitimacy through a Letter of Marque, but his true motivations run far deeper. Clever, manipulative, and quick to exploit weakness, Swinford thrives in tension. This role calls for an actor who can balance menace with charisma and intensity with biting humor.
Hayley Wynter
(Acting / Singing / Dancing)
Hayley Wynter is the spirited and adventurous daughter of the Governor, raised in privilege but restless within its confines. Intelligent, curious, and quietly rebellious, she longs for something beyond the expectations placed upon her.
Disguised as a pirate, she joins the competition for Captain Bloody Boden Hale’s treasure in search of freedom, excitement, and purpose. Bright, expressive, and emotionally open, Hayley’s arc is one of discovery: not choosing between adventure and safety, but defining what kind of life — and love — truly matters to her.
Lady Ophelia Wynter
(Acting / Singing / Dancing)
Lady Ophelia Wynter is a proper, poised, and impeccably mannered widow who has spent her life adhering to the expectations of high society. As the devoted aunt and chaperone to Hayley Wynter, she arrives determined to maintain decorum, propriety, and control — even in the wildly improper setting of a pirate competition.
Sharp-tongued, observant, and unafraid to voice her disapproval, Ophelia’s journey moves from rigid propriety to rediscovered independence, courage, and unapologetic presence. This role requires strong comedic timing and the ability to transition from restraint to liberation.
Samantha “Sam” Cotton
(Acting / Singing / Dancing)
Sam Cotton is a sharp, resourceful, and quietly confident young cabin girl aboard Captain Scalawag’s ship. Though often underestimated because of her age, Sam is the most observant member of the crew and often the one holding everything together behind the scenes.
Practical, clever, and grounded, she serves as the crew’s unofficial navigator, problem-solver, and voice of reason. This role calls for a young performer with strong comedic timing, emotional authenticity, and clear storytelling ability.
The Moderator – Commodore Stormwright
(Acting / Singing)
The Moderator is the commanding, charismatic host of the proceedings — part master of ceremonies, part referee, and part mischievous orchestrator of chaos. Charged with overseeing the contest between rival pirate crews, the Moderator serves as the direct link between the stage and the audience.
Confident, theatrical, and quick on their feet, Stormwright must command the room, engage the audience, and maintain control with wit and flair. Think ringmaster meets game show host, with just a hint of pirate mystique.
Rutledge Brinke
(Acting / Talk-Singing / Some Movement & Limited Dance)
Rutledge Brinke is a large, enthusiastic, and endearingly unpredictable member of Captain Scalawag’s crew. He appears to be all muscle and very little plan, frequently at the center of whatever has just gone spectacularly wrong.
But beneath the chaos lies a deeply loyal and big-hearted crewmate. This role calls for strong physical comedy, expressive reactions, impeccable timing, and genuine warmth.
First Mate Mayhem Marnie / Marley
(Acting / Talk-Singing / Dance)
First Mate Mayhem Marnie/Marley is the fiercely capable, no-nonsense backbone of Captain Scalawag’s crew. Where others improvise, exaggerate, or stumble into success, Marnie/Marley gets things done — efficiently, expertly, and often twice to make up for everyone else.
Sharp-witted, highly skilled, and always two steps ahead, this role demands strong presence, confident physicality, and excellent comedic timing grounded in truth.
Seraphyne Tideborne
(Acting / Singing)
Seraphyne Tideborne is an ethereal and ancient mermaid — mysterious, luminous, and bound to the deep magic of the sea. She appears only when called by the “Truth of the Tide,” summoned by forces older than ships, crowns, or men.
Long ago, Seraphyne and Captain Scalawag shared a fleeting but profound connection, but their paths could never truly join. This role requires strong vocal control, emotional subtlety, commanding stillness, and movement that feels fluid and deliberate.
Captain Scalawag
(Acting / Singing / Dance)
Captain Scalawag is a charismatic, quick-witted, and delightfully unpredictable pirate whose charm is matched only by his talent for talking his way into — and occasionally out of — trouble. A natural storyteller and born performer, he leads his crew with equal parts confidence, mischief, and instinct.
While he may initially come across as unserious or self-serving, Scalawag’s true nature reveals itself in moments of pressure. This role demands exceptional comedic timing, strong improvisational instincts, and magnetic stage presence. Please note: Captain Scalawag is performed by the show’s creator and is not part of this casting call.
Audition Sides
The following sides are provided so performers can get a feel for the show’s tone, characters, and storytelling style.
Hayley & Scalawag
Context: Hayley is testing Scalawag — seeing if his talk of freedom is real or just performance. Scalawag meets her energy, but there’s a moment where truth slips through.
HAYLEY: You make it sound easy.
SCALAWAG: I make most things sound easy. It saves time.
HAYLEY: Sailing wherever you like. Answering to no one.
SCALAWAG: Ah — there’s the dream, innit?
HAYLEY: Isn’t it the truth?
SCALAWAG: It’s a version of it.
HAYLEY: So which part isn’t true?
SCALAWAG: The part where it’s easy.
Hayley & Cortland
Context: Hayley challenges Cortland’s rigidity. He struggles between duty and feeling.
HAYLEY: You don’t belong here.
CORTLAND: On the contrary — I am exactly where I need to be.
HAYLEY: No. You’re where you’ve been told to be.
CORTLAND: There is a difference.
HAYLEY: Is there? Because from where I’m standing, you look like a man trying very hard not to want anything.
CORTLAND: Wanting things complicates matters.
Scalawag, Hayley & Cortland
Context: Hayley stands between the two captains. The moment is charged, but not yet resolved.
SCALAWAG: Well… this has become inconveniently symmetrical.
CORTLAND: This is hardly a game, Scalawag.
SCALAWAG: Everything’s a game, Captain. The question is whether anyone’s enjoying it.
HAYLEY: I can decide for myself.
SCALAWAG: Of course you can. That’s rather the point.
CORTLAND: There are consequences to every choice.
Swinford, Ophelia & Cortland
Context: Ophelia challenges Swinford’s behavior. Swinford grows increasingly irritated.
OPHELIA: I must say, for a man claiming discipline, your tone is remarkably… untidy.
SWINFORD: And I must say, for someone far from home, you’re remarkably comfortable giving orders.
OPHELIA: Observations, not orders.
SWINFORD: Careful.
CORTLAND: That’s enough.
Sam & Crew
Context: The crew is mid-chaos. Sam is trying to keep things on track while everyone else is not.
SCALAWAG: This way!
MARNIE: That is absolutely not the way.
RUTLEDGE: Aye! I’m going this way!
SAM: No one should be going anywhere.
SAM: We go north.
SCALAWAG: North is… a suggestion?
Commodore Stormwright
Context: The Moderator addresses the audience directly as the “Council of the Seas.”
STORMWRIGHT: Council of the Seas… I trust you are awake, attentive, and at least moderately impartial.
STORMWRIGHT: You have been summoned not merely to observe, but to decide.
STORMWRIGHT: The rules are simple. I enforce them.
STORMWRIGHT: You may cheer. You may groan. You may even question the life choices that brought you here. But you may not remain silent.
Seraphyne Tideborne & Scalawag
Context: Summoned by the “Truth of the Tide,” Seraphyne rises from the well. She and Scalawag share a past connection — deep, but impossible.
SERAPHYNE: You called.
SCALAWAG: I was told I had to.
SERAPHYNE: You always did what you were told?
SCALAWAG: Not often.
SERAPHYNE: The sea does not ask what might have been. It only carries what is.
